Process

A look at how I make each stone by hand

After cutting pieces to uniform length and height, I find a pattern I like that meets my minimum width requirements. Ideally, I can get a few stones out of each block, but even small cutoffs from prior rounds can get repurposed into new patterns.

I first rough up each piece of wood with low-grit sandpaper. This increases the surface area and allows for better adhesion. Then I apply wood glue, align the strips into a block, and clamp it all together to dry.

After cutting out a shape from the block (usually an oval or circular disc) I mark a center line around the width to help me sand both sides evenly. I find a disk sander works well to rough out the basic shape of the stone before hand sanding.

Each piece is finished with a mixture of linseed oil and beeswax. Because these are meant to be handled, the natural oil of your skin will keep your worry stone shiny and uniquely transform its color over time.
